CHIHUAHUA, Mexico (TNND) — Two U.S. Embassy officials and two Mexican officials died in a crash on Sunday while conducting an operation in Morelos.

According to reports, the U.S. officials were involved in efforts to dismantle a local drug lab. The identities of the deceased have not been publicly released.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson expressed condolences, stating, “This tragedy is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by those Mexican and U.S. officials who are dedicated to protecting our communities.” He emphasized a commitment to security and justice.

The crash occurred following increased violence related to the recent death of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.” The Mexican military killed Cervantes in February, triggering violent clashes that resulted in 30 cartel member deaths and 25 National Guard fatalities.

Emergency responders are on the scene, and an investigation into the crash is underway. No further details on injuries or road closures have been confirmed at this time.
