EXETER, R.I. (WJAR) — A late-night crash on South County Trail resulted in the death of a 24-year-old woman and an arrest early Sunday.
According to Rhode Island State Police, Milbia Hernandez was struck by an SUV around 10:15 p.m. Saturday near 310 South County Trail. She was reportedly standing in the northbound lane when the incident occurred.
Emergency response closed South County Trail from Exeter Street south to the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Hernandez was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities stated that the SUV's driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. It remains unclear if any charges will be filed linked to the crash.
Witness reports suggested that another woman may have pushed Hernandez into the road; however, Rhode Island State Police Lt. Col. John Allen confirmed that this claim is unfounded.
Early Sunday morning, police arrested 26-year-old Tariq Famogun of Providence in connection with the investigation at a Providence residence. He faces charges of violating a no-contact order and obstructing officers. Authorities have not confirmed any relationship between Famogun and Hernandez.
