WOODFORD COUNTY, Ky. — The estate of John McBroom, a truck driver who perished in a multi-vehicle crash on I-64, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
On Sept. 12, 2025, McBroom, 39, was driving a semi-truck for Verst Group Logistics and stopped on westbound I-64 due to slowed traffic in a construction zone, according to authorities. The lawsuit alleges that Matthew T. Jackson, 32, driving a semi for Hillsboro Transportation Company, failed to stop, striking a Nissan Versa and a Chrysler 300 before colliding with McBroom's truck.
The impact reportedly caused a severe fuel fire, engulfing both commercial vehicles. Casey Whitlock, the driver of the Chrysler, was killed, and a passenger sustained serious injuries. Jackson was also killed in the crash.
Witnesses reported that Jackson was allegedly speeding, distracted, and fatigued, having exceeded allowable hours of service. The lawsuit claims negligence on Jackson's part and vicarious liability against Hillsboro Transportation Company, accusing them of negligent hiring, training, and supervision.
“The company had a responsibility to ensure its drivers were properly trained and monitored. That responsibility was not met, and John McBroom paid for it with his life,” said Tad Thomas, representing the estate.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and the estate is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages. Lane closures were reported following the crash, and tow services were engaged to clear the vehicles from the scene.
