HENDERSON, NV (KTNV) — A 14-year-old girl died following a collision involving her e-scooter and a vehicle at a marked crosswalk in Henderson on Friday evening.

Authorities reported that the driver, 64-year-old Michael Stanton, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter for allegedly driving around stopped cars as the girl crossed the street. The incident occurred around 5:47 p.m.; it remains unclear if the teen was wearing a helmet.

The girl's death has prompted Henderson Police to enhance enforcement of regulations concerning e-scooters and e-bikes, particularly among young users. Police Chief Reggie Rader emphasized the importance of parental education regarding safety equipment and the risks involved with these devices.

Henderson's new ordinance mandates helmet use for riders under 18 and prohibits the operation of e-devices with speeds exceeding 15 mph. Rader noted that the department has conducted over 300 stops for violations related to illegal e-bikes.

Law enforcement officials can issue citations to riders and their parents and impound non-compliant devices. With the holiday season approaching, Rader urged parents to reconsider purchasing e-scooters or e-bikes for teenagers, citing the potential dangers.

He also advised motorists to remain vigilant for young riders, who may approach intersections rapidly, reducing reaction time.
