INDIANAPOLIS — A school bus crash involving a blue Honda minivan and an Indiana State Police truck injured 13 people Tuesday morning on an Interstate 465 ramp.
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, eight children were transported to local hospitals, including Indiana University Health Riley Hospital for Children and Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent. Seven children are reported to be in stable condition, while one remains serious.
Five adults, including two state troopers and three school employees, are stable at Eskenazi and IU Health Methodist hospitals.
Authorities located the blue minivan on Friday afternoon after initiating a search. Indiana State Police released a dashcam image of the vehicle involved in the crash at the U.S. 40/East Washington Street interchange.
Investigators stated that the Warren Township school bus, the minivan, and the police truck were all entering northbound I-465 from Washington Street when the incidents occurred. The bus, carrying 24 students from Creston Intermediate and Middle School and three adults, led the group. As both the bus and minivan merged into the center lane, the minivan moved left to overtake the bus. The bus driver swerved right, colliding with the police truck, causing the truck to slide and hit the concrete median barrier. The bus subsequently tipped onto its driver's side.
While investigators believe the minivan did not directly hit the bus, they seek to interview the driver for further clarity. The investigation is ongoing, with no additional information available at this time.
