Police Chase Leads to Critical Injury on I-465 in Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (October 23, 2023) — A woman was hospitalized in critical condition early Monday following a police chase that ended in a crash on I-465.
At approximately 3:20 a.m., officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to a disturbance involving a Lincoln sedan and a Kia SUV in the 6700 block of West Washington Street, near I-465, about 5.5 miles from Indianapolis International Airport.
According to IMPD, the Lincoln driver reported being aggressively followed by the Kia, which allegedly displayed a firearm and collided with the sedan.
Both vehicles entered I-465 northbound, where IMPD attempted to initiate a stop just south of the Crawfordsville Road overpass. The Kia slowed but subsequently fled from law enforcement, resulting in a pursuit.
Due to heavy fog conditions, officers lost sight of the Kia. Approximately 10 minutes later, the SUV was located on its side after striking an attenuator and concrete barrier near the ramp to westbound I-74.
Firefighters extricated the Kia driver, identified as a woman, who was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Information regarding the Lincoln driver remains withheld by authorities.
The exit ramp to westbound I-74 was closed for several hours for cleanup and repairs. The incident is under investigation by IMPD.
