LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A mother and her 4-year-old daughter are hospitalized following a serious crash in east Las Vegas on Tuesday night.
The collision occurred around 8:16 p.m. at North Nellis Boulevard and East Owens Avenue. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, a 17-year-old boy was speeding southbound in a Ford F-150 when he collided with a northbound Honda Civic attempting a left turn at a flashing yellow signal.
Inside the Honda were 24-year-old Jessica Avila and her daughter, Isabella. Avila's sister, Roseanna Sosa, reported that the pair was en route to purchase a goldfish when the incident took place. Avila sustained severe injuries, including two broken legs, a broken arm, and a broken neck, while hospital staff indicated that Isabella is paralyzed from the waist down.
Both were transported to UMC Trauma for treatment. The area remained under scrutiny Wednesday, with debris from the crash still visible.
Neighbors, including Stephanie Carbajo, noted a pattern of speeding in the vicinity, stating, “Constant speeding… they'll either go 50, 55” in a 45 mph zone. Despite this incident, LVMPD reported a 6% decrease in collisions and a 27% decline in traffic fatalities from January 1 to September 19 compared to last year.
The teenage driver suffered minor injuries, was treated and released from the hospital, then taken into custody on reckless-driving-related charges. Police do not suspect impairment for either driver. The incident remains under investigation.
