Brockton Community Holds Vigil for Cape Verde Crash Victims

BROCKTON, MA — Residents gathered on Monday evening to mourn the 25 individuals, mostly teenagers, killed in a crash in Cape Verde over the weekend.

The tragic accident occurred on Saturday night, prompting grief and support from the Cape Verdean community in Brockton, one of the largest concentrations of Cape Verdeans in the U.S.

Mayor Moises Rodrigues, a Cape Verde native, expressed the community's sorrow. “The tragedy of this past Saturday evening came as a real shocker to all of us,” he said. “This has been tough. I have received hundreds of phone calls from non-Cape Verdeans asking how they can help.”

Claudil Gomes, a member of the Brockton School Committee, emphasized the need for unity in the face of tragedy. “An incident similar to what just happened in Cape Verde, regardless of where it happened, should be something that brings people together,” he stated.

The vigil included prayer and reflection, as attendees sought to support each other during this difficult time. Authorities have not released further details regarding the victims or ongoing investigations related to the crash.
