Serious Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-291 West in South Windsor Injures Three
SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — A serious crash involving eight vehicles occurred on Interstate 291 West near Exit 2 on Monday morning, resulting in three individuals suffering serious injuries.
Emergency services responded at approximately 7:45 a.m. According to authorities, a school transport van was involved, not a school bus as initially reported. A total of nine people were in the vehicles; three sustained serious injuries, three had minor injuries, and three declined medical attention. There were no fatalities.
The South Windsor Fire Department confirmed that a commercial truck, a pickup truck, and several cars were involved in the incident. The Exit 2 on-ramp remains closed, with no estimate on its reopening.
Witnesses reported significant wreckage at the scene. Fire Department Assistant Chief Brian Peck described the crash as a “very violent accident.”
Crews from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are responding to a significant fuel spill contained on the road and shoulder, with a private contractor handling the cleanup.
This accident marks the fifth this summer in the area, near a one-lane work zone on the Bissell Bridge, which has been undergoing construction since June. The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT) is monitoring the situation and has implemented additional signage and speed reductions through the work zone.
