A series of crashes involving a wrong-way driver on I-93 North in Boston led to a fatality Saturday night just before midnight.
The incident occurred near exit 15A in South Boston. Authorities reported that Antone Carvalho, 81, of Somerset, was driving south in the northbound lane when he collided head-on with a Chevrolet Cruze, resulting in the death of 28-year-old Riley Sergi from Haverhill.
Prior to the fatal crash, a Honda Odyssey, containing a family of four, lost control while attempting to evade Carvalho's vehicle. Carvalho sustained unspecified injuries and was transported to a local hospital. He is expected to be summoned to court at a later date.
Witness Ed Murray, who was traveling with his wife and daughter, recounted the moments leading up to the accident. “All of a sudden, there's a set of headlights coming straight at me,” he said, describing his effort to alert Carvalho.
This marks the second fatal wrong-way crash on Massachusetts roads in three days; Sheena Grandpre, 43, of Medway, died in a similar incident on I-290 East in Northborough on Wednesday night.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crashes and lane closures were in effect during the emergency response. Further details will be released as the situation develops.
