Maui Police Confirm ATV Crash on Molokai

Kaunakakai, Molokai — An all-terrain vehicle crash on Kamehameha V Highway resulted in two deaths and four injuries on Saturday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:57 p.m. near mile post 28, according to the Maui Police Department (MPD). A 20-year-old woman from Kaunakakai was driving a Polaris utility terrain vehicle with five passengers when the ATV veered toward the south shoulder, overcorrected, and struck a large tree stump after crossing the roadway.

All six occupants were from the ATV. The driver and 19-year-old Shyalyn Rapanot, also of Kaunakakai, died at the scene. Four others—a 16-year-old girl, a 17-year-old girl, and two men aged 20 and 22, all from Kaunakakai—sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Molokai General Hospital.

None of the passengers was wearing helmets or seat belts at the time of the crash, police reported. Authorities indicated that alcohol and speed were factors in the collision, but the involvement of drugs remains under investigation.

The identities of the deceased were withheld for 24 hours to allow family notifications. This incident marks the sixth and seventh traffic fatalities in Maui County for 2026, compared to 12 at this time last year.

The investigation is ongoing.
