HILO, HAWAII—UPDATE: Friday, 8:15 a.m. A 36-year-old Hilo man, identified as David Wong, died following a motorcycle collision on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred at 10:24 p.m. at the intersection of West Kawili and Kinoole streets, according to Hawaii Island Police. Wong was riding a black and yellow Suzuki dirt bike west on West Kawili Street when he collided with a 2012 Nissan Versa, which was making a left turn into a parking lot.
Wong was unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m. after emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures. The sedan's 22-year-old driver and her two passengers were transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of Wong's death. Authorities indicated that speed may have contributed to the crash, and the East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing its investigation.
This incident marks Hawaii County's fifth traffic fatality of the year, a decrease from nine fatalities during the same period last year.
