UPS Plane Crash in Louisville Leaves Several Dead and Injured
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A UPS aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday, around 5:15 p.m., en route to Honolulu, Hawaii.
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 had three crew members on board and was carrying approximately 38,000 gallons of fuel. The crash sparked significant fires, spreading to nearby facilities, including a large recycling center.
Authorities confirmed at least four fatalities and 11 injuries, with some individuals in serious condition. These numbers are expected to rise as investigations continue.
In response to the incident, the Louisville airport has shut down its airfield and temporarily halted TSA services, while UPS has ceased operations, canceling Next Day Air services and sending employees home for the evening.
UPS issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the accident, emphasizing their commitment to safety. “Our heartfelt thoughts are with everyone involved. We are engaged with the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation and coordinating with local authorities on response efforts,” the statement read.
