ALDSWORTH, England (WKRC) — Liberty Mitchell, 21, of Chipping Norton, received an increased prison sentence of nine years and three months for a high-speed crash that killed two people on Dec. 2, 2022.
Mitchell's original sentence of six years and eight months was extended following a referral by the U.K. Attorney General to the Court of Appeal. Authorities said she was driving at nearly 100 mph in a 60 mph zone while attempting to overtake three vehicles on the wrong side of the road, ultimately colliding with a taxi.
Taxi driver Octavian Codreanu died at the scene, while passenger Moyra Whelan, a history teacher, succumbed to injuries later at a hospital. Six additional individuals suffered injuries, with three reporting serious conditions.
Investigators discovered videos on Mitchell's social media accounts that showed her engaging in dangerous driving behaviors. One video reportedly captured her speeding at 100 mph, while another showed her crossing into oncoming traffic. Authorities noted Mitchell was driving between cleaning jobs without appropriate insurance coverage.
Mitchell pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. In addition to her prison term, she faces an eight-year and four-month driving disqualification and must pass an extended driving test to regain her license.
Attorney General Ellie Reeves stated that Mitchell's “reckless actions behind the wheel claimed the lives of two people and left many others with life-changing injuries.”
