ALDSWORTH, England (WKRC) — A 21-year-old woman has had her prison sentence extended by over two years for a high-speed crash that killed two people.
Liberty Mitchell, from Chipping Norton, saw her initial sentence increase from 6 years and 8 months to 9 years and 3 months after the U.K. Attorney General referred her case to the Court of Appeal. According to the Attorney General's Office, the incident occurred on December 2, 2022, when Mitchell attempted to overtake three vehicles on the wrong side of the road at nearly 100 mph in a 60 mph zone, resulting in a collision with a taxi.
Taxi driver Octavian Codreanu died at the scene, while passenger Moyra Whelan succumbed to injuries later at a hospital. Six additional individuals sustained injuries, three of whom were classified as serious.
Investigators discovered videos on Mitchell's social media that depicted her driving recklessly, including one allegedly showing speeds of 100 mph. Authorities indicated that she was driving between cleaning jobs, despite her insurance not covering business use.
Mitchell pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury. Alongside her prison term, she faces an eight-year driving ban and must pass an extended driving test to regain her license.
Attorney General Ellie Reeves stated that Mitchell's actions “claimed the lives of two people and left many others with life-changing injuries.”
