VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — A woman is dead and three others are seriously injured following a head-on crash late Friday night.
According to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office (VBCSO), the accident occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. on M-43 near 46th Street in Waverly Township. Investigators say an SUV traveling westbound crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding with another SUV head-on.
The driver of the westbound SUV, a 37-year-old woman from Lawrence, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in that vehicle, a 27-year-old Lawrence woman, was also injured. The second SUV, driven by an 18-year-old male from Kalamazoo, contained an 18-year-old female from White Pigeon; both sustained serious injuries, authorities reported.
Emergency responders closed M-43 for approximately four hours to manage the scene and assist the injured.
While the investigation is ongoing, deputies suggest that heavy rains experienced Saturday night may have contributed to reduced visibility at the time of the crash.
