BOSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man died and several others were injured in a semi-truck crash on eastbound I-96 Saturday afternoon.
According to Michigan State Police, the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. in Ionia County. A semi-truck failed to stop for stationary traffic and rear-ended a Chrysler Pacifica, propelling it into a Ram pickup truck.
The driver of the Pacifica, a 77-year-old man from Greenville, was pronounced dead at the scene. A front-seat passenger in the Pacifica sustained critical injuries, while two other passengers suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The 35-year-old driver of the semi from Philadelphia was uninjured.
The Ram pickup's driver was also unharmed; however, a 33-year-old woman in the vehicle suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. All injured individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities reported that all individuals involved were wearing seat belts, and while alcohol does not appear to be a factor, speed is under investigation. Several local agencies responded to the scene, and eastbound I-96 was closed for several hours.
The investigation remains ongoing.
