LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A crash involving a suspected impaired driver left hundreds without power Tuesday morning, marking the latest in a series of similar incidents in the Valley.

The collision occurred on a local roadway, prompting response from emergency services. No fatalities were reported, but several individuals sustained injuries. Power outages were widespread as a result of the crash, requiring utility crews to assist with repairs.

Authorities have noted three crashes, including two fatalities, that took place within a span of 12 hours over the past weekend. These incidents have raised concerns among officials and legislators, who are actively seeking solutions to enhance roadway safety.

In response to increasing concerns, Assembly Bill 4, known as the Nevada Safe Streets and Neighborhoods Act, was signed into law during the recent legislative session. The bill increases penalties for driving under the influence and aims to deter reckless behavior behind the wheel.

Local safety organizations are also stepping up efforts. Driver's Edge, a non-profit focused on youth driving education, conducted a three-day event over the weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, attracting over 700 attendees. The program teaches defensive driving techniques, pairing young drivers with professionals to navigate real-life hazards.

According to Jeff Payne, CEO of Driver's Edge, fostering awareness among drivers could significantly reduce accidents. “ crashes are the number one killer of youth in America,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach to driving safety.

As the DMV reviews its educational materials, potential updates to learner's permit tests may reflect new DUI-related topics stemming from Assembly Bill 4. For additional details, Driver's Edge will host another safety event from April 10-12. More information is available on their website.
