MORONI, Utah (KUTV) — A tragic crash early Tuesday morning claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and her newborn baby.
The incident occurred around 7:55 a.m. on Dairy Lane, near the intersection of 1808 E., according to Utah Highway Patrol (UHP).
Authorities stated that Rebecca Hafen, 36, was walking on the shoulder when she was struck by a vehicle. She was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
Medical personnel performed an emergency delivery following the crash. The newborn, initially receiving treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, later died, according to updates from a GoFundMe established for Hafen's family.
The fundraiser reported that family members spent time with the newborn before his passing, expressing their grief over the loss of both Rebecca and her child.
UHP indicated that charges against the driver are not anticipated unless evidence suggests speed was a factor; the decision will fall to the Sanpete County Attorney's Office.
The GoFundMe aims to assist the Hafen family with medical costs and other related expenses during this difficult time.
