U.S. Launches Airstrikes Following Helicopter Crash Linked to Iran
Middle East, October 4, 2023 – The United States conducted airstrikes against Iran early Wednesday after an American AH-64 Apache attack helicopter crashed, allegedly due to a collision with an Iranian drone.
U.S. Central Command reported that the strikes targeted Iranian air defense and surveillance sites near Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island. Iran confirmed the strikes but did not disclose details on any damages.
Authorities said the helicopter went down at approximately 3:30 a.m. local time Tuesday during a patrol near the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed that both aviators were safely rescued by a drone boat and taken to safety.
In response to the U.S. actions, Iran launched missiles at targets in Jordan, which reported intercepting five missiles aimed at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, where U.S. forces are stationed. No injuries were reported from the missile attacks.
This escalation follows increased tensions in the region, including strikes by Israel against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon and Iran’s threats of retaliation against U.S. forces. Central Command described the airstrikes as a “proportional response” to previous attacks on U.S. interests.
Ongoing investigations into the helicopter crash and the broader conflict continue, as diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation face significant hurdles.
