CUSTER COUNTY, S.D. — Two men were killed in a single-vehicle ATV crash on September 1, 2025, around 5:40 p.m. on Flynn Creek Road, seven miles south of Custer.
Authorities said Curtis Shawn Molone, 60, of Long Pine, Nebraska, was driving a 2023 Can-Am Maverick Side-by-Side southbound when he failed to navigate a curve. The vehicle skidded sideways on the gravel road, entered the east side ditch, and struck a tree.
Both Molone and his passenger, 41-year-old Shawn Lee Malone from Ainsworth, Nebraska, were pronounced dead at the scene. According to reports, neither man was wearing a helmet, although they were secured by seat belts.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. All details released remain preliminary.
