Fatal Crash on Highway 287 in Larimer County
LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. — Two drivers were killed Friday evening in a head-on collision on Highway 287 caused by a suspected drunk driver.
The crash occurred around 6:18 p.m. at Red Mountain Road. According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), a citizen reported a northbound 2018 Honda Accord for potential drunk driving just minutes before the incident.
A southbound 1987 Chevrolet Suburban attempted to evade the Honda but struck a guardrail before being hit head-on. Both vehicles subsequently caught fire, trapping the drivers inside.
CSP confirmed both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The identities will be released by the Larimer County Coroner's Office following next-of-kin notification.
Highway 287 is closed in both directions at Red Mountain Highway, with authorities advising motorists to choose alternate routes. The exact timeline for reopening the roadway is currently unknown. CSP's Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating the crash.
