Milton, DE – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash that occurred on Nov. 7 at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Route 1.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a Ford Edge, Nissan Altima, BMW X2, and BMW 135 were traveling southbound in the right lane, slowing or stopped for traffic near Hudson Road. At that time, a Peterbilt dump truck, also southbound in the right lane, failed to slow and struck the rear of the Ford, resulting in a chain reaction with the other vehicles.
Charlene Broccolo, 62, of Bel Air, MD, was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. Passenger Albert Broccolo, 64, also from Bel Air, was declared dead at the scene.
The 57-year-old driver of the Nissan from Millsboro sustained nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. The BMW X2 driver, a 75-year-old woman from Milton, also sustained nonlife-threatening injuries and was hospitalized. The 27-year-old Peterbilt driver from Wilmington received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The 74-year-old driver of the BMW 135 from Lewes was not injured.
Route 1 was closed for approximately five hours for investigation and clearance. The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.
