Two Fatalities in Fiery Crash on U.S. 287

A between a Honda Accord and a Suburban resulted in two fatalities on U.S. 287 on Friday evening, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

At approximately 6:18 p.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to the incident at Red Mountain Road. Prior to the crash, a resident reported to 911 that the driver of the Honda appeared to be under the influence, authorities said.

Investigators determined that the Suburban was traveling south on U.S. 287 when the Honda crossed from the northbound lane into oncoming traffic. The Suburban's driver attempted to avoid the collision but hit a guardrail before the two vehicles collided head-on.

Both vehicles were engulfed in flames, trapping the drivers inside. Emergency responders pronounced both individuals dead at the scene. The Larimer County Coroner's Office will release their identities once families have been notified.

The crash led to the closure of U.S. 287 in both directions for several hours, with the roadway reopening just after 1 a.m. Saturday, according to Colorado Department of Transportation officials. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
