LAWRENCE COUNTY, S.D. — Two Colorado residents died Thursday in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 14A near Deadwood.
The collision occurred at 6:27 p.m. on August 6, approximately four miles east of Deadwood at mile marker 47. U.S. Highway 14A was closed for about three hours following the incident.
According to preliminary information, a 15-year-old female was driving a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound, while a 59-year-old male operated a 2020 Harley Davidson Street Glide eastbound. The motorcycle failed to negotiate a turn, crossed into westbound lanes, and collided with the Jeep. Both the Harley Davidson driver and his 54-year-old female passenger, who were not wearing helmets, suffered fatal injuries.
The Jeep driver from Sturgis was unharmed. However, a 67-year-old male passenger from Lead sustained minor injuries, while a 59-year-old female passenger from Lead was uninjured. The Jeep driver was wearing a seat belt; the seat belt use of the 67-year-old passenger is under investigation.
The identities of those involved have not been released pending family notification. All released information is preliminary. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
