Toddler tragically dies in alleged DUI crash involving mother, a 14-year-old driver, reports say.

HAMPTON, Va. (TNND) — A 1-year-old child died following a crash involving a 14-year-old driver under the influence on March 27.

According to Virginia State Police, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on March 25 along Interstate 64. The vehicle reportedly veered off the road, hit a guardrail, and then collided with a barrier.

Authorities confirmed the child was not properly restrained at the time and sustained serious injuries leading to the fatality. The teen driver, identified as the child's mother by family members, also suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital; her condition remains unknown.

The 14-year-old has been charged with Driving Under the Influence, driving without a license, and a child restraint violation. Additional charges are under consideration, authorities stated.

Family members indicated the child would have turned 2 years old on April 4. The child's grandmother expressed her grief, stating, “This is the hardest.” The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
