Toddler dies in alleged DUI crash involving 14-year-old mother as driver, reports say.

HAMPTON, Va. (TNND) — A 1-year-old died following a crash involving a 14-year-old driver allegedly under the influence on Monday.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred around 2 a.m. on Interstate 64. Preliminary reports indicate the vehicle veered off the road, struck a guardrail, and collided with a barrier.

The child, who was not properly restrained, sustained serious injuries and later died. The 14-year-old driver was also seriously injured and transported to a local hospital, but her condition remains unknown.

Authorities stated the driver was under the influence and was not wearing a seatbelt. She faces charges of driving under the influence, driving without a license, and a child restraint violation. Additional charges may follow.

Family members confirmed the teenager is the child's mother and stated the child was set to celebrate her 2nd birthday on April 4.
