Five juveniles were arrested early Tuesday after allegedly stealing a vehicle in Medford and crashing into a Massachusetts State Police cruiser in Malden, authorities said.

Medford Police responded to a report of the juveniles breaking into a vehicle on Barbara Lane.

According to a witness, he chased the suspects after his wife alerted him to the break-in. He provided a description to police, stating, “Two of 'em had gotten into my truck, and the other ones were trying doors.”

An officer later spotted a vehicle matching the suspects' description on Lincoln Road. The vehicle collided with a red Prius and fled the scene, officials reported.

As the officer attempted to engage with the vehicle, the driver allegedly accelerated toward the officer, prompting the officer to discharge their firearm. Massachusetts State Police were notified, and a pursuit ensued into Malden.

The suspect vehicle collided with a state police cruiser in Malden, where witnesses reported hearing shots fired during the encounter.

“It was 5:16 a.m.; I heard a loud crash outside,” said witness Kim Cortes. “Then ‘boom' — right into the fence over there.”

Following the crash, two occupants were apprehended on the scene, while others fled but were later captured at James and Medford streets.

Three officers and one suspect were treated at local hospitals for minor injuries, none of which were due to gunfire, according to authorities.

The investigation is ongoing.
