COLUMBIA, SC — A fatal crash occurred on U.S. Highway 1 in Lexington County as winter weather continues to create hazardous driving conditions.

At approximately 7:10 p.m. on January 31, a 2005 Pickup crossed the median and collided with a 2024 van near Jamestowne Court, according to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt. The driver of the pickup was at the scene, while a passenger was transported to a hospital with injuries. Two occupants of the van also sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Authorities warned that and have made roadways dangerous throughout the Midlands. “Driving conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly after sunset,” exclaimed Governor Henry McMaster, who announced the closure of state government offices in Richland and Lexington Counties for February 2 due to anticipated travel complications.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation stated that while crews are working to clear roads, conditions remain treacherous. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect as overnight temperatures are expected to drop into the teens, with road conditions worsening after dark.

Local transit services, including The COMET, plan to resume operations in Richland and Lexington counties on February 2, though USC Transit will remain shut down.

Columbia city officials urged residents to stay off the roads as plowing efforts continue. The Columbia Police Department has responded to several minor accidents, but no injuries have been reported.

Travelers at Columbia Metropolitan Airport should monitor flight schedules closely, as some cancellations occurred due to the weather. The airport remains open, with crews actively managing runway conditions.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
