ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — A 9-year-old was killed and a 12-year-old injured Monday afternoon when a dirt bike collided with a FedEx truck on Midway Road.
The injured child has been released from the hospital, according to family representatives. Authorities reported that the two boys were riding a dirt bike when the crash occurred.
Steven Baker, attorney for the injured child, stated that the 12-year-old sustained several broken bones and a fractured tooth. He is recovering physically but faces emotional challenges from the incident.
Witnesses confirm that cycling is common in the area, with local resident Megan Sharma noting that children frequently ride along Midway Road.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office reported that there have been 110 bike crashes in St. Lucie County since 2020, with 15 involving children. Specifically, Midway Road has seen six crashes, two involving minors.
Sheriff Richard Del Toro expressed condolences to the families affected, emphasizing the dangers of operating off-road vehicles on public roadways. He urged for a concerted effort to improve roadway safety.
FedEx also extended condolences, stating that they prioritize safety and are cooperating fully with the investigation.
