Secret Service apprehends fleeing driver following fatal crash near White House.

WASHINGTON (7News) — A two-vehicle crash resulted in one death early Saturday near the White House, with one driver arrested after fleeing.

The collision occurred around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, according to the United States Park Police.

Authorities reported the driver of the fleeing vehicle was apprehended by U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division members. The suspect is now in the custody of U.S. Park Police.

One driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. A passenger in that vehicle was during the crash and at the scene.

The body has been taken by the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The U.S. Park Police Traffic Safety Unit initiated the crash investigation and reconstruction. Following consultation with the U.S. Attorney's Office, the U.S. Park Police took over the investigation and the arrest related to the incident.

The suspect remains in custody, and charges are pending coordination with the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Road closures associated with the investigation have been lifted, and all affected roadways have reopened. The investigation is ongoing.
