Route 101 in Amherst closed after fatal crash involving tanker truck
AMHERST, N.H. —
Two people were killed Friday in a crash involving a tanker truck and two other vehicles on Route 101.
According to Amherst Police, a westbound car attempted to pass another vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision with the tanker truck. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
A pickup truck towing a trailer struck the passing car but the driver sustained no injuries.
Witnesses reported seeing the overturned tanker truck off the road, with a small oil leak being managed by authorities.
Amherst Police Chief Anthony Ciampoli confirmed, “The oil tanker flipped over from the collision. There is a leak that has been contained, but all fuel must be transferred to another tanker.”
Emergency response teams from Clean Harbors and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services were deployed to oversee the situation and manage the transfer of fuel.
Authorities indicated that Route 101 will remain closed until the tanker is safely removed from the site.
