DAY COUNTY, SD — A Rochester man died Wednesday night in a vehicle and pedestrian crash near Pierpont.
The incident occurred around 10:43 p.m. on July 15 at 130th Street and 412th Avenue, approximately seven miles west of Pierpont. Timothy Allen Smith, 51, was struck by a commercial truck while he was standing in the roadway after a prior deer collision.
According to preliminary reports, Smith and Kimberly McDeid, 53, were traveling westbound on 130th Street in a 2026 Kia when they hit a deer. They returned to the scene in a parked 1998 Honda CR-V, leaving the headlights on and facing east.
Simon Lee Pies, 21, was driving westbound in a 2021 International MV607 truck with passenger Rylie Marie Mitchell, 19. Pies attempted to avoid the parked Honda but struck Smith before colliding with the car.
Smith sustained fatal injuries; McDeid, Pies, and Mitchell were unharmed and wearing seatbelts. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident.
