WAIPAHU, Hawaii (Island News) – A woman was taken to the hospital after she was ejected from a vehicle when she lost control early Tuesday morning, according to the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) reported that the single vehicle collision occurred on Kunia Road south of Kunia Drive in the Kunia area at approximately 1:25 a.m.
Officials reported that a 24-year-old woman was traveling southbound on Kunia Road, when she traveled into the northbound lane and off the roadway into the brush. She then struck multiple rock boulders and a cattle gate, before the vehicle continued traveling forward into an open field where it overturned multiple times.
The 24-year-old woman was extracted by officers before the vehicle became engulfed in flames.
EMS crews responded to the scene at 1:46 a.m. to treat the woman for multiple injuries, including a severe arm injury. Paramedics took her to a nearby emergency room in serious condition. However, she was later listed in critical condition.
Police reported that the woman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
At this time, police believe that speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in the incident. It's unknown if drugs are a factor.
The investigation remains ongoing.
