Police: Woman claims her dog grabbed the steering wheel before fatal crash

ROSEAU, Minn. — A near Roseau killed 82-year-old Barbara Lee Welburg on May 29 around 4 p.m., authorities said.

According to court documents cited by the Star Tribune, 43-year-old Shauna Dokken crossed into oncoming traffic and struck Welburg's , later telling investigators her dog interfered with the steering wheel.

First responders pronounced Welburg dead at the scene. Authorities said Dokken sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported for medical evaluation.

Authorities said alcohol tests were negative. KSTP reported Dokken told investigators she had taken prescription medications, including Adderall and lorazepam, earlier that day.

A witness told investigators he swerved to avoid the oncoming vehicle shortly before the crash.

Authorities said Dokken was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide. The investigation remains active.
