KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — UPDATED – 12:10 p.m., 6/24/26: A truck driver died following a tractor trailer crash on Interstate 64 in Kanawha County.

Authorities identified the victim as Jeffrey Carl Simons, 63, of Wellsburg, Iowa. The incident occurred Tuesday at approximately 5:30 p.m. at the Dunbar-South Charleston Bridge, according to South Charleston police.

The crash involved Simons' truck and another vehicle, resulting in a fire that shut down the westbound lanes for several hours. Emergency crews worked on scene to extinguish the fire and clear the wreckage.

Police blocked traffic from the bridge and diverted vehicles off exit 54. Motorists are advised to avoid the area while cleanup continues.

UPDATED – 6:40 p.m., 6/23/26: Emergency personnel reported the crash shortly before 5:30 p.m., with multiple agencies responding. Witnesses indicated the truck caught fire after colliding with another vehicle.
