HAMPTON, Va. — A one-year-old infant died following a crash on Interstate 64 early Monday morning.
Virginia State Police reported the incident occurred around 2:04 a.m. near the 261-mile marker, involving a vehicle driven by a 14-year-old heading east.
The vehicle veered off the right side of the interstate, struck a guardrail, then crossed over to the left side, colliding with a jersey wall.
The teenage driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital; police noted she was not wearing a seatbelt.
The infant passenger succumbed to injuries on Thursday. Authorities indicated the infant was not properly restrained during the crash.
The 14-year-old driver faces charges of driving under the influence, driving without a license, and a child restraint violation. Additional charges are under consideration.
