STURGIS, S.D. — One person was killed and 21 others were injured in 16 separate crashes during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally on Monday.

Throughout the rally's 10 days, the South Dakota Highway Patrol provides daily reports on accidents and criminal activity. This information, known as the Rally Tally, only reflects incidents investigated by the Highway Patrol, excluding data from local police and sheriff's departments. The following details cover incidents from 6 a.m. Monday, August 4, to 6 a.m. Tuesday, August 5.

Fatal Crash in Black Hills

BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST — Shortly after 1 p.m. Monday, a three- collision at mile marker 43 on U.S. Highway 16A resulted in one death. A 60-year-old male operator of a 2019 Harley-Davidson died at the scene. A female passenger was to a Rapid City hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the drivers of a 2000 Indian and a 2008 Can-Am Roadster suffered serious injuries and were taken to a Custer hospital. None of the riders were wearing helmets, according to authorities.

STURGIS, S.D. — At approximately 6 p.m. Monday, a 2005 Harley-Davidson crashed on Vanocker Canyon Road after failing to navigate a curve. The driver was to a Rapid City hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Collision with Truck

FALL RIVER COUNTY, S.D. — Around 11 a.m. Monday, a 2019 Harley-Davidson motorcycle attempted to pass a 2024 Ford F-150 towing a trailer on South Dakota Highway 89 and struck the pickup while it was making a left turn. The motorcyclist sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Custer hospital.

Other Notable Incidents

JOHNSON SIDING, S.D. — At 8:45 a.m., a 2009 Harley-Davidson lost control on a and crashed off U.S. Highway 385, resulting in minor injuries for the driver, who was not wearing a helmet.

RAPID CITY — A two-vehicle crash at 8:30 a.m. involved a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox and a 2012 Honda Accord, leading to minor injuries for the Accord driver.

Several other motorcycle crashes occurred throughout the day, with a range of injuries reported. Each incident is under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
