STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (7News) — A motorcoach bus crashed into slowing traffic on Interstate 95, resulting in five fatalities and 44 injuries early Saturday morning.
The incident occurred around 2:35 a.m. on May 29, near mile marker 146 southbound, close to the Quantico exit. According to authorities, the bus, operated by E&P Travel, struck a Chevrolet Suburban in a work zone. The force of the impact caused the Suburban to collide with an Acura SUV and additional vehicles.
The crash resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including two children. Four of the deceased, aged 7 and 13 along with two adults, were from Greenfield, Massachusetts. The fifth victim, Priscilla R. Mafalda, 25, of Worcester, Massachusetts, was in the Suburban. Emergency responders transported 44 individuals to hospitals, with three suffering critical injuries.
Virginia State Police (VSP) are conducting an investigation, alongside the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). A preliminary report is expected within 30 days, while a final report may take up to 24 months.
The bus driver, Jing Sheng Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, sustained injuries in the crash and has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, with additional charges forthcoming. Dong remains hospitalized, under police custody without bond, pending a court appearance.
NTSB officials stated the investigation will examine multiple factors, including driver actions, vehicle condition, and work zone design. The agency is also gathering witness statements and video evidence related to the incident.
Mary Washington Healthcare reported treating 19 patients from the crash, with 15 discharged as of Saturday afternoon. Four remain hospitalized, including one in critical condition.
