A motorcycle crash on Main Street in Springfield on Aug. 21 resulted in the death of a 20-year-old male rider.
Authorities responded to the intersection of 37th and Main streets at approximately 6:47 a.m., where they discovered a motorcycle and a 2015 Honda SUV engulfed in flames. Officers assisted two occupants from the SUV to safety while bystanders attempted to aid the motorcyclist, identified as Alexander Baugh, who was found lying in the roadway.
Baugh succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The SUV's occupants were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to emergency responders.
Investigators, led by Springfield Deputy Chief George Crolly, believe the Honda SUV was traveling eastbound and making a left turn onto 37th Street at the time of the collision. Baugh was reportedly traveling westbound and struck the SUV at what authorities described as “excessive speed.”
The driver and passenger from the SUV are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
