Motorcyclist Dies After Collision on H-1 Freeway Near Honolulu Airport

HONOLULU, HI—A 23-year-old man died early today following a crash on the H-1 freeway near Honolulu Airport.

The incident occurred around 12:10 a.m. in the westbound lanes near Ohohia Street and the airport off-ramp at Exit 16A. According to Honolulu Police, the motorcyclist was and lost control, rear-ending a vehicle driven by a 47-year-old man. The impact resulted in the motorcyclist being onto the roadway.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded, providing treatment on-site before transporting the motorcyclist in critical condition to a hospital, where he later died. Authorities confirmed that he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The 47-year-old driver also suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Investigators from the HPD Traffic Division's Vehicular Homicide Section indicated that speed was a contributing factor. The involvement of drugs or alcohol remains under investigation.

This incident marks Oahu's 29th traffic fatality of the year, a decrease from the 63 fatalities recorded by this time in 2022.
