Motorcycle crash claims life of decorated sheriff's captain

SPARTANBURG — Funeral arrangements have been announced for Capt. Steve Henderson, a 19-year veteran of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, who died in a crash on August 14.

Visitation is scheduled for August 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, located at 690 Southport Road in Roebuck. A celebration of life will take place on August 21 at 2 p.m. at NewSpring Church, 399 Peachwood Center Drive in Spartanburg.

Capt. Henderson, a Boiling Springs High School graduate, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1994 to 1998. He began his law enforcement career in uniform patrol and worked in the narcotics division before joining the K-9 Division, where he was recognized as K-9 Handler of the Year five times.

A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to support his wife, Taylor, and their family, raising over $11,000 as of August 19. Henderson and Taylor were married in November 2024.

Following the incident, the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page received numerous messages of support, highlighting Henderson's integrity and humor. Many community members have expressed their condolences and offered prayers for his family and friends.
