WOBURN, MA— An independent investigation has revealed new details in the case of a Massachusetts State Police sergeant indicted for a fatal crash in December 2023.

Sgt. Scott Quigley is charged with felony motor vehicle homicide in connection with a crash on December 12, 2023, that resulted in the death of 37-year-old Angelo Schettino in January 2024. Quigley was off-duty at the time and faces a wrongful death lawsuit alleging he was driving under the influence.

The Middlesex County District Attorney's office commissioned an independent investigator to determine whether any staff members had prior knowledge of Quigley's alleged misconduct. According to authorities, the office was unaware of any allegations against Quigley until January 2026, during jury selection for an unrelated murder case.

While some officials knew of Quigley's involvement in a serious incident, allegations of intoxication were only disclosed by State Police Sgt. Anthony DeLucia in summer 2024. DeLucia reportedly expressed to a colleague that Quigley had a blood alcohol level of 0.11 at the time of the crash but advised confidentiality.

The report indicates a potential cover-up, noting that Quigley received a warning for lane violations after the crash and was on injury leave for eight months.

DeLucia has been suspended with pay, while investigations continue, including a criminal inquiry by the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office and an internal affairs investigation. State Police declined to comment, citing ongoing investigations.

Attorney Christina Pujals Ronan, representing Quigley, stated that her team will begin its own investigation once formal arraignment takes place.
