Accident Results in Death and Charges for Boat Operator in October Incident
CHARLESTON, SC — On October 8, 2022, a boating accident led to the death of one individual and charges against the operator, Christopher Zuccala.
Authorities reported that Zuccala, who was arrested for Boating Under the Influence (BUI) with great bodily injury, had been operating the vessel while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The incident prompted a significant emergency response, including several local agencies.
Zuccala was charged following the collision that injured multiple people and ultimately resulted in the death of a passenger. According to DNR officers at the scene, signs of intoxication were evident, although no alcohol reading was taken immediately.
Approximately five hours post-collision, a blood sample revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.05, just below the legal limit of 0.08. Authorities noted the presence of cocaine and a prescribed stimulant in the sample. Assistant Solicitor Russell indicated that if the case went to trial, the state would argue for a higher BAC at the time of the accident.
Following a plea agreement on August 14, Zuccala was sentenced to three years in prison, followed by five years of probation. He is also required to complete 500 hours of community service.
The victim's mother, Nancy Todd, expressed her hope for preventive measures in the boating community in light of the tragedy. Zuccala's defense attorney stated his client aims to promote boating safety, although the timeline for such initiatives remains uncertain.
