Critical Crash on Long Lake Leaves Man Injured
LONG LAKE, ME — A collision between a boat and a SeaDoo on Long Lake Saturday evening left a 25-year-old man critically injured, according to North Lakes Fire & Rescue.
Evan Pelkey was confirmed injured by North Lakes Chief Darren Woods on Monday. Few details about the incident are available as the Maine Warden Service is conducting an investigation.
The accident occurred around 7:15 p.m., prompting a response from several agencies, including North Lakes Fire & Rescue, which dispatched two engines and a utility vehicle staffed by 12 personnel. Ambulance services from Fort Kent and Madawaska also responded to the scene.
Woods stated that the identity of the other operator involved remains undisclosed, and he could not confirm whether Pelkey was driving the boat or the SeaDoo.
Witnesses reported that the other driver transported Pelkey to the Long Lake Sporting Club immediately after the crash, where two on-site nurses provided initial medical assistance. Woods highlighted the timely arrival of emergency crews, who were returning from a nearby event.
Pelkey was first taken to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent before being flown to a hospital in Bangor for further treatment.
In response to his injuries, community members have initiated a GoFundMe campaign, seeking support for Pelkey and his family. The fundraising effort has raised nearly $5,000 in less than a day. Pelkey sustained significant injuries, including the loss of an arm, which was reattached during surgery, as well as facial and leg injuries. His recovery may require an extended stay in Bangor.
