LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A Las Vegas man was sentenced to 16 to 40 years in prison for a DUI crash that resulted in the death of an unborn child.

Maximiliano Chavez, 28, received the sentence on Thursday after pleading guilty to three counts in February. Authorities reported that the collision occurred on Sept. 6, 2025, at Las Vegas Boulevard and Blue Diamond Road.

According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police (LVMPD), Chavez drove his Grand Cherokee through a red light, colliding with a Subaru Forester making a left turn. Several occupants of the Subaru were transported to UMC for medical treatment, including a pregnant woman.

Medical staff were able to deliver the child via caesarean section, but the newborn, identified as Baby Boy Dauz, died shortly after birth. Despite the tragic outcome, LVMPD noted that the baby would not be categorized as a fatality under state and federal guidelines.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson reported that blood samples taken from Chavez showed blood-alcohol content levels of .10 and .08, just at the legal limit. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
