Driver Killed in Collision with Pickup Truck in Lafayette County

DARLINGTON, Wis. — A 56-year-old man died in a crash involving an Amish buggy and a pickup truck on Highway 23 north of Darlington Tuesday afternoon.

Joseph Glick was at the scene. His horse was also euthanized following the incident.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched at 4:15 p.m. after the pickup truck driver reported the crash. Both vehicles were traveling north when the pickup struck the buggy from behind, causing it to veer into the southbound lane.

Sheriff Reg Gill confirmed the buggy was destroyed in the collision. “It was demolished and pushed into a pile, along with the horse,” Gill stated.

The truck driver is cooperating with the investigation. He told deputies he had seen the buggy ahead but looked away briefly before the impact.

Investigators do not suspect impairment as a factor, but the investigation is ongoing. Gill noted that crashes involving buggies often relate to the speed and size differences between vehicles.

The buggy sustained significant damage, hindering the verification of its lighting configuration. While Amish buggies are required to have front and rear lights, the compliance of this buggy remains unconfirmed.

The Sheriff's Office emphasized the importance of road safety, urging drivers to slow down and remain vigilant.
