Katherine Legge's Race Ends Early at Indianapolis 500
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Katherine Legge's attempt to race at the Indianapolis 500 ended in a crash on May 28, 2023, during lap 18.

According to race officials, the 45-year-old British driver lost control of her vehicle while trying to avoid a spinning driven by Ryan Hunter-Reay. Despite her efforts to swerve left and miss him, Legge's suffered terminal damage.

Legge was poised to be the first woman to complete the double-header of the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600, scheduled to take place later that evening in Charlotte. She had planned to fly to North Carolina immediately after completing the Indy 500.

This was Legge's fifth Indy 500 attempt; her best finish was 22nd in 2012. Tonight, she will make her debut in the Coca-Cola 600 for Live Fast Motorsports, starting 37th in the No. 78 .

Legge joins a distinguished group of drivers, including John Andretti, Tony Stewart, and Kurt Busch, who have started both races on the same day. Kyle Larson was the most recent competitor to try for the double but faced challenges in previous years.

Further details about the accident and any possible investigations have not been disclosed.
