BOZEMAN — A fatal pedestrian crash on West Oak Street claimed the life of Leslie Brown on Feb. 26, 2023.

According to the Bozeman Police Department, a juvenile driver was traveling westbound in the outside lane when another vehicle stopped to let Brown cross the street. The juvenile switched lanes, struck Brown in the crosswalk, and did not show signs of excessive speed.

Bozeman Police Chief Jim Veltkamp stated, “Inattentive and appear to be the primary factors that led to this crash.” Investigators believe distractions inside the vehicle contributed to the driver's failure to notice the stopped car and the pedestrian crossing.

Authorities are withholding the name of the juvenile driver due to age restrictions. Investigators are in the final stages of their investigation and will consult with city and county attorneys to determine any potential charges.

Emergency medical personnel responded, but Brown's injuries were fatal. There were no other reported injuries, and traffic along West Oak Street was temporarily impacted during the investigation.

This incident has sparked discussions among Bozeman residents about improving pedestrian safety in the area.
