Two Deadly Incidents in Poweshiek County: Train vs. Semi-Truck Crash
POWESHIEK COUNTY, IA — A crash between a train and a semi-truck on Highway 21 resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries at approximately 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the incident caused the derailment of more than 20 railroad cars on the Iowa Interstate Railroad tracks near Brooklyn and Victor. The semi-truck, driven by 38-year-old Michael Orton from Palmyra, Missouri, was transporting a large John Deere tractor, which may have contributed to the derailment. Robert Orton, 14, a passenger in the semi-truck, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Michael Orton was airlifted to a hospital with unspecified injuries. Authorities confirmed that several individuals were aboard the train, but any injuries reported were minor and did not require hospitalization.
Highway 21 has been closed in both directions between Interstate 80 and Highway 6. Poweshiek County officials stated the road would remain closed for at least several days to facilitate cleanup and repairs. There are currently no swing arms at the railroad crossing, and authorities are investigating the status of warning lights at the time of the incident.
Iowa Interstate Railroad has not yet responded to requests for comment.
